HONEY AS An Alternative MEDICINE

Honey contains almost every vitamin, mineral and carbohydrate your body need for survival. Even it does not contain protein, which is necessary for muscle growth, you will find it in beehive too. Honeybees collect  pollen which contain 25% protein and they store it in form of Bee bread.

But more than for food , honey is valuable for it's healing properties.

Most valued property of honey is it's antibacterial power. This power comes from hydrogen peroxide production. Honey contains enzyme  Glucose oxidase which breaks into hydrogen peroxide and gives honey it's antibacterial power. Also because honey is supersaturated sugar solution , it is killing bacteria and fungi by drawing water from their cells. Lower pH makes honey acidic and prevent growth of many bacteria. It is important to mention that some floral honey may contain catalase , an enzyme that neutralize hydrogen peroxide, so honeydew honey may be better choice for healing open wounds and bacteria-caused disorders. The medical grade honeys have potent  bactericidal activity against antibiotic-resistant bacteria causing several life-threatening infections to humans . Currently, many researchers have reported the anti-bacterial activity of honey and found that natural raw unheated honey has some broad-spectrum antibacterial activity when tested against pathogenic bacteria, oral bacteria as well as food spoilage bacteria .

Another property  is anti-inflammatory.  The anti-inflammatory effect of honey is due to its substantial amounts of phenolic contents.  Many clinical trials have been reported and revealed that, when honey is applied to wound, there is a decrease in inflammation and will have a soothing effect. There is much evidence for the anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects of honey in terms of publications in modern medical and scientific journals. The exact mechanism of anti-inflammatory activity and wound healing property of honey has yet to be demonstrated.   In a colitis inflammatory model, honey became as effective as prednisolone remedy. While there may be side effects of corticosteroids and NSAIDS, honey has natural anti-inflammatory effect free from major side effects .

Raw honey contains substantial amounts of compounds such as flavonoids and other polyphenols which may function as anti-oxidants . Antioxidants reduce oxidative stress in the body   Flavonoids not only support anti-inflamatory action of honey but also boost autoimmune system.

A strong correlation has been found between anti-oxidant activity and the color of honey. Many researchers have reported that dark honey has a higher total phenolic content and consequently a higher anti-oxidant capacity.

An animal study found that rats that consumed honey had protection against brain damage caused by exposure to lead.  In some studies, honey has been shown to help prevent memory disorders .

Honey also contain compounds against Helicobacter pylori which cause stomach ulcers.

When and how to use honey as a remedy

Apply honey on open wound covering the whole spot.Use bandage over honey.Change daily.

Also works for burns, bites, scalds and to reduce itching.

Clostridium botulinum may be present in honey so infants up to 2 years old should not take honey since it is not safe for them, because it can cause infant botulism. (Honey sterilized by Gamma rays kills Clostridium botulinum spores )

Floral and honeydew honey differ in composition and because honeydew honey has more minerals and bioflavonoids it may have better use as natural remedy.

Honeydew honey is usually better for :       Inflammations

                                                                                       Infections

                                                                                       Viral diseases

                                                                                       Bacterial diseases

                                                                                       Boosting immune system

                                                                                       Skin diseases

PROPOLIS AS An Alternative MEDICINE

Propolis or bee glue is a resinous mixture that honey bees produce by mixing saliva and beeswax  with exudate  gathered from tree buds, sap flows, or other botanical sources. It is a rich mixture of polyphenols, flavonoid aglycones, phenolic acids and their esters and phenolic aldehydes and ketones.

Propolis is the most medicinal of all bee products.

Propolis properties...anti-microbial

                                            anti-bacterial

                                            anti-fungal

                                            anti-viral

When and how to use propolis

Propolis is not cold water soluble. The most common home solvents used for extraction are hot water and grain alcohol.

Propolis is mostly used in form of grain alcohol tincture.

Current applications of propolis include formulations for cold syndrome (upper respiratory tract infections, common cold, and flu-like infections), as well as dermatological preparations useful in wound healing, treatment of burns, acne, herpes simplex and genitalis, and neurodermatitis. Propolis is also used in mouthwashes and toothpastes to prevent caries and to treat gingivitis and stomatitis. It is widely used in cosmetics and in health foods and beverages.

Other uses of propolis...

  • Diabetes. Research shows that taking propolis may improve blood sugar control by a small amount in people with diabetes. But it doesn't seem to affect insulin levels or improve insulin resistance.
  • Cold sores . Most research shows that applying an ointment or cream containing 0.5% to 3% propolis five times daily helps cold sores to heal faster and reduces pain.
  • Swelling (inflammation) and sores inside the mouth . Most research shows that rinsing the mouth with a propolis mouth rinse helps heal sores caused by cancer drugs or dentures.

  • Improving immune response.
  • Infections.
  • Infections of the kidney, bladder, or urethra .
  • Inflammation.
  • Nose and throat cancer.
  • Stomach and intestinal disorders.
  • Tuberculosis.
  • Ulcers.
  • Much more ...

Dosages of propolis are individual...

If using raw propolis for chewing ,brush your teeth with alcohol after chewing since raw propolis could stain your teeth. Propolis tincture can be taken orally 2 - 3 times a day (5-30 drops).

Propolis treatments are not recommended for people with asthma , weak body or people allergic to bee products.

Beeswax as an Alternative medicine

Beeswax is the substance that forms the structure of a honeycomb. Thanks to its rich hydrophobic protective properties, the beeswax is present in cosmetics and body products. Also used widely in aromatherapy. In foods and beverages, beeswax used as stiffening agent.

Beeswax has a wide range of medicinal use too. It helps soothe and facilitate the healing of abrasions. It prevents harmful bacteria from entering the body through  broken skin and protects the skin with a layer  against external irritants. Some studies  showed an antimicrobial effectiveness of beeswax  especially when  enhanced   with other natural products such as honey or olive oil.   Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties benefit those who suffer from topical allergies or skin ailments, such as eczema and rosacea.

Beeswax might help lower cholesterol levels, prevent infections, and help protect the stomach from ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs .

Other properties of beeswax :

 Anti-stress

 Anti-hemorrhoid

 Healing

 Anti allergic

Bee Venom And BVTherapy

Bee venom is odorless and clear liquid. It contains more than 80% of water and the rest is  a complex blend of peptides including melittin, adolapin, apamin,  MCD-peptide and enzymes.  Melittin is the main and most toxic compound in bee venom, constituting 50–60% of the blend. Bee venom has  a strong antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflamatory, anticancer and antifungal properties. Average of 140-150 micro-grams of bee venom is delivered in one bee sting.

The medicinal use of bee venom dates back to ancient Egypt .
With the increasing advent and acceptance of natural medicines, interest in the therapeutic value of bee venom has grown especially when bee venom show some promise as an arthritis and multiple sclerosis treatment.

Studies fro around the world show that bee venom has not only ability to lessen the pain but also block inflammation. Lot of people from different countries prove , that bee venom is effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and can completely reverse inflammation process in humans joints. When bee venom is injected into the body, melittin stimulates production of cortisol which is not only anti-inflamatory agent , but also boost humans body with a glucose energy. It is also strong immunological agent that  stimulates body's protective mechanism against disease.

A lot of studies show strong anti-cancer properties of bee venom.
